Home Master TM is one of the popular and best performing models under Home Master’s standard under-sink reverse osmosis systems. It’s a basic RO system that offers great filtration performance without much bells and whistles.
The model comes in two options, the Home Master TM and TM-ERP-L. Both versions have the same filtration stages but the TM-ERP-L has a slightly larger filtration capacity and is equipped with a permeate pump.
In this review, we will look at the much standard version, the Home Master TM model and what sets it apart from its counterpart the TM-ERP-L so that you can see which model might be best for you in case you are after a standard under sink reverse osmosis system.
As we mentioned earlier, both the Home Master TM and TM-ERP-L standard versions have the same filtration process. They utilize 4 RO filtration stages consisting of two prefilters, a reverse osmosis membrane, and a postfilter.
The 1st stage features a 10” sediment pre-filter made from spun-bonded polypropylene media. It’s an effective filter with a high surface area and does well in removing fine particles and large sediments down to 5 microns. It’s able to trap extra-fine dirt, silt, sand, scale particles and rust particles lingering in the water.
The sediment filter is followed by a 10″ carbon prefilter featuring a coconut shell catalytic carbon media. This is yet another powerful 5-micron filter that clears out chlorine, VOCs, unpleasant tastes, odors and most common chemicals from the water.
The use of the advanced catalytic carbon allows it to effectively remove even the very stubborn chemical disinfectant chloramine which ordinary carbon filters are often unable to treat.
At the heart of both the Home Master TM and TM-ERP-L models is a Dow Filmtec TFC RO membrane with pores size of 0.0001 microns. This is a high-quality membrane that will get rid of up to 99% of all the contaminants in the water including total dissolved solids, heavy metals, harmful microorganisms, harmful chemicals, and many more.
The 4th stage is fitted with a 5-micron coconut shell catalytic carbon postfilter which refines the RO water by eliminating residual tastes and odor from the storage tank. It also helps absorb chlorine or chemicals that might have passed through the earlier stages.
In short, although both versions use 4 filtration stages, the filters and membrane are of good quality and will deliver cleaner and safer drinking water like any other high-end 5-stage RO system.
Filtration Capacity and Efficiency
The Home Master TM will give you a maximum of 50 gallons of pure water a day with a 70 psi feed pressure and a temperature of 77°F.
It’s an average capacity of most standard RO systems and while it may fluctuate with the change in pressure and temperature, it’s still decent enough to address the water needs of small to medium families.
The TM-ERP-L model, on the other hand, can deliver up to 75 gallons a day, so it’s a better option if you need a little more capacity.
Another commendable thing about this TM-ERP-L model compared to the Home Master TM version is that it’s very efficient. It comes with a permeate pump which not only raises the production speed of the system but significantly reduces water waste by about 80%.
While the TM wastes 4 gallons for every gallon of clean water it produces, the Home Master TM-ERP-L wastes only a gallon of water for each gallon of pure water produced.
It’s simply a highly efficient RO system that can save you a lot of money in the long run. The nice thing though is that both versions use larger tubing and fittings than traditional RO systems which doubles their flow rate.
You will be able to fill a large water pot quickly unlike when using a typical under sink RO system. The TM-ERP-L will give you an even faster water delivery speed with the inclusion of the permeate pump.
Installation and Maintenance
Installing the Home Master TM or the TM-ERP-L model is easy and straightforward. With just some basic DIY skills, you can set it up within an hour and the installation kit has everything you need to install it.
The two units are designed to fit nicely under any kitchen countertop with a normal-sized cabinet. However, the TM-ERP-L requires a power source which may somewhat limit your installation location unless you choose to install one in the cabinet or basement.
The filters and membranes are also durable. The two prefilters, as well as the postfilter, can last up to one year while the membrane can last 3 to 5 years.
Perhaps the best advantage you will get from using any of Home Master’s RO systems is that they feature a modular filter design.
The filters of the TM and TM-ERP-L models are incorporated into the housings which are changed together at the same time unlike the canister design in traditional RO systems where you change only the filters and not the housings.
The modular design is much better because it makes filter replacement simple and efficient. It increases the filters’ longevity too and lowers the chances of contaminants accumulating in the housings. In the canister design, the casing remains the same hence encouraging contaminant buildup which may ultimately weaken the filters.
Overall, the Home Master TM is a reliable unit and an ideal option for anyone looking for a basic but quality RO system. If you have problems with your feed water pressure or want a basic system with a bit more capacity, then the Home Master TM-ERP-L will suit you best.
